The Institute of Humanities in Helping Professions provides the teaching of humanities subjects that are part of the accredited study programs at all levels of studies – from bachelor’s degree to doctoral degree.
Applied languages
About us
The Applied Languages Section guarantees and organises language education in all bachelor's, master's, and doctoral study programs at the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences.
What do we do and for whom?
We teach professionally oriented foreign languages – English, German, and Latin. We also offer an optional Spanish course for beginners. Teaching professional English and German, we focus on providing professional vocabulary related to the field of study and practicing professional communication. Our goal is to help students to understand professional terminology, work with professional literature, search for professional information, and communicate in situations they may encounter during their studies and future profession. Latin focuses on lexical and grammatical orientation in medical terminology.
We also offer language courses as part of lifelong learning. These are so-called "remedial courses" for students who have failed the entry language tests in English and German. Passing these tests is a condition for starting professional foreign language studies.
We provide translations into English and German for "Kontakt" and the "Journal of Nursing, Social Studies, Public Health and Rehabilitation". These are faculty-published journals.
Our goals
We believe a university-educated specialist should be well-equipped in their profession and be able to professionally communicate in at least one foreign language.
We strive to increase foreign language competence using modern teaching methods and information technology
Bachelor’s degree
Students obtain credit in English and German if they fulfil the set requirements, i.e., they actively participate in classes, perform short presentations on given topics, and successfully pass a credit test at a minimum of 70%.
Students obtain credit in Latin if they successfully pass a credit test at a minimum of 70%.
The final exam in English and German includes a 10-15-minute PowerPoint presentation on a professional topic related to the field of study. The presentation is followed by supplementary questions from the teacher and a discussion on the presented topic.
The Latin colloquium is based on an oral interview. Students must demonstrate knowledge of vocabulary and basic grammar and the ability to use them in practice. The exam emphasises the terminology of the studied field.
Master’s degree
Non-contact form
Students write a standard-page essay on a professional topic. The topic is entered at the beginning of the credit essay. The exam includes a self-chosen 20-page professional text related to the student's field of study. Students are required to email or send a printed form of the text to their examiner at least one week before the exam. The exam includes a debate on a chosen topic and an oral translation of a randomly selected passage from the text.

Doctoral degree (PhD)
Doctoral degree graduates must be able to present and publish the results of their scientific and research activities in a world language.
To pass the foreign language exam, students are required to master the B2+ level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. They prepare for the exam independently.
The exams consist of three parts:
- Written test (testing knowledge of relevant language structures for correct written expression)
- Oral exam (a debate to test the ability to communicate about the issues of the given field)
- Oral translation (a random selection from 100 pages of professional text, which the doctoral student prepares in advance).
