Faculty of Health and Social Sciences

The Faculty of Health and Social Sciences of the University of South Bohemia (FHSS USB) has a unique position in the Czech Republic, particularly due to its interconnection of health care and social topics. Our aim is for graduates to understand and apply a holistic approach an approach that looks at a person as a whole and thus ensures that both the body and the soul receive support. The harmonious combination of these perspectives offers opportunities to train professionals who can perform their profession as a mission. This constitutes a great advantage for the Faculty in the current world – people educated in this way will always be needed in the workplace. The Faculty is an educational institution that is distinctively focused on the health and social care field. It carries out creative activities in the sphere of application, in the frame of specific projects, and direct clinical and field work with people who are disadvantaged both health-wise and socially. It develops scientific and research activities and international cooperation with important institutions and professional centres.

For many years now, the number of student applications has been continually higher than the capacity. This is due to the opportunities which the faculty’s courses provide for employment, its favourable location and its cross-border collaboration with educational institutions in the neighbouring countries, a very good network of international partner organizations and cooperation within humanitarian and development aid, its right to appoint both associate professors and professors, and its use of modern means of education techniques. The Faculty prepares professionals who are in high demand. You will always find its students and graduates in situations where adverse health and social problems need to be dealt with.

FHSS USB teaches a wide range of disciplines. Education is closely linked to practice; therefore, the graduates find employment easily. They are prepared to not only help with the improvement of patients’ health conditions, but also to integrate people into the society and solve social problems.

The Faculty is an institution that truly lives up to its motto: We teach people to help. Thanks to this, the faculty trains students for whom their profession can become their mission. A demanding mission, but a mission that allows them to lead fulfilling lives.

History

The Faculty of Health and Social Sciences of the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice started its activity in September 1990, initially as part of the Faculty of Education. It successfully justified its right to existence during its first term of office, so that from the beginning of the following academic year 1991/1992 it became a separate faculty of the University of South Bohemia.

The first Dean of the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences of the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice was Assoc. prof. Jana Šemberová. She stood at the cradle of the Faculty, and with her colleagues she created its conception and strived for its dignified integration into the structure of the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice. Her Vice-deans were, successively: assoc. prof. Jiří Jankovský, Ph. D., Dr. Zdeněk Slomek and Zdeněk Štěpánek, MD, CSc.

Since 1998, under the direction of the second Dean, Assoc. prof. Vladimír Vurm, MD, there has been a revolutionary change in the structure of the faculty, and an increase in the number of students in under-graduate and post-graduate studies. A number of activities have been set up to develop its activities up to today.

From the establishment of the Faculty to the end of 1999, Petr Hlaváč led the economic department. On January 1, 2000, the position of the Faculty bursar was created, which until February, 2011, was held by Bohumír Papáček.

The further development of the faculty continued under the third Dean, prof. Miloš Velemínský, MD, dr. h. c., who held this position from February 1, 2004 to January 31, 2011. During this period there was a significant strengthening of the faculty’s scientific and publishing activities, which influenced the acquisition of the right for habilitation and professorship proceedings. In that period, the positions of Vice-deans were held by: Assoc prof. Vladimír Vurm, MD, prof. Leoš Navrátil, MD, prof. Valérie Tóthová, PhD., and Assoc. prof. Adéla Mojžíšová, PhD.
